Homesteading Role Models
My parents are my role models and I couldn't have asked for better! I grew up with parents who grew up in a time where you had to make do with what you had. They planted gardens every year, we raised chickens for their eggs and meat, and dad also raised some of his own beef for butchering.
We would go berry picking every year, and just up the road on the big rock on the hill there were wild grapes that we would harvest. With these fruits, mom made plenty of jams, jellies, and juice that would be sealed, preserved, dehydrated, or frozen.
Inspiration
My parents are my inspiration. They still are very self sustaining and grow gardens, berry patches, and have fruit trees. I aspire to be like them!
When the world went in the direction of technology and my parent's way was not the norm of the world. In 2020, when COVID caused many to all of a sudden have to stay home, they realized that doing things homemade was not a bad idea after all. It made the world think more about self sustainability.
I am thankful for my parents and their influence to teach me how to be conservative and self sustainable and hope that I can pass some of these ideas on to my readers.
Canning and Dehydrating
All my life I watched my mom can venison, tomatoes, green beans, pickles, applesauce, peaches, pears, and more. I have some canning recipes on here that are some my mom made and some I have put together for myself.
Homemade Recipes
Is there anything better than the aroma of cinnamon rolls or bread baking in the home? I think not! Because of the way I was brought up, I rarely do anything semi homemade and everything is basically from scratch.
Here you will find some of my favorite recipes, baked goods, quick meals, and casseroles. All that are made from scratch with love (and absolutely delicious!)
Plant Based Recipes
I grew up with a mom who became a vegetarian in my before teen years. Her diet was a big influence on me and I grew to love the foods she ate as well as the food she made for the the meat eaters in the house.
A plant based diet is a diet that consists mostly or entirely of plant based foods. It does not necessarily mean you are a vegetarian or vegan. You can follow a plant based diet and still consume meat, you just consume more plant based foods than meat.
Venison and Fish Recipes
I remember going fishing as a young girl with Dad and Mom and catching sunnies and perch. I grew out of it for a while, but in my later years began to enjoy it again. Fish you caught yourself and cooked fresh is some of the best you can eat!
I also grew up in a family of hunters. Every fall my dad, uncle, and brothers would head to the woods and come home with venison for the table. That was about the extent of my wild game experiences, but it was a delicious on. Venison is a great protein to cook with, is lean and can be used in so many ways as you will find here on Honeybunch Hunts!
