Canned whole peeled tomatoes: I used a quart sized jar of home canned tomatoes but you can use store-bought tomatoes. I highly recommend san marzano tomatoes.
Unsalted butter: addes a creaminess and boosts flavor.
Red pepper flakes: these are optional but just a touch of spicy.
Salt: start small and increase as needed
Fresh basil: I like to simmer the fresh herbs in the pizza sauce, then remove them when done.
Honey: adds a touch of sweetness to balance out flavors and acidity of the tomatoes.
🔪 Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil until it shimmers. Add the onion, garlic, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using), and cook for 3 minutes, until onions have softened.
- Add tomatoes, salt, basil, and honey. Bring to a boil, then reduce temperature and cook pizza sauce on low heat for 1 hour, until sauce is reduced by almost half. Remove from heat and allow to cool 15 minutes.
- Transfer pizza sauce to blender and blend on high until smooth. Store in airtight glass jar.
🥄 Equipment
High speed blender, Immersion blender, or food processor
Medium saucepan
Wooden spoon
Glass storage jar: be sure to use one with an airtight lid.
🥫Storage
Refrigerate: store in an airtight container in the fridge up to 1 week.
Freeze: store in a freezer-safe container up to 3 months.
📖 Variations
- Use canned crushed tomatoes or fresh tomatoes with skins removed can be used in place of canned.
- Add a splash of balsamic vinegar to deepen the flavor of the sauce.
- Stir in 1 teaspoon crushed fennel seeds for added flavor.
- If you would like a thicker sauce, whisk in 1 tablespoon of tomato paste into the sauce in step 2.
- Italian seasoning can be substituted for the dried oregano.
- Substitute black pepper for red pepper flakes.
- Substitute 1 teaspoon garlic powder for the fresh garlic.
💭 Tips
- If you like a chunkier sauce, skip the blender and just a potato masher to break down the tomatoes.

The ingredients has butter in the list but wasn’t in the instructions, does it need the butter or was that a typo?

Thanks for letting me know it needed to be fixed. I updated the recipe card. It goes in with the olive oil, but you don't have to use it. I like to add it for flavor.
